The film begins with a comical raid of a warship carrying dragons as cargo. It all goes haywire as the stealth mission is soon turned into a free-for-all. The scene, set in a misty sea is one of the highlights of the film, as is the awe-inspiring glimpse of the hidden world, which is neon-lit, warm, fuzzy and magical and should definitely get a film of its own. The film continues with the slow burn romance between Hiccup and Astrid (America Ferrera) and also shows you the courtship between Toothless and Light Fury. It also offers you an account of how the other characters are shaping up. Snotlout (Jonah Hill) tries to impress the now-widowed Valka (Cate Blanchett), Hiccup's mother, the ever-bickering twins Ruffnut (Kristen Wiig) and Tuffnut (Justin Rupple) continue to get on everyone's nerves while Gobber the Belch (Craig Ferguson) remains the tough outside but mushy inside adviser to Hiccup.
Emotional depth has been the strength of the franchise and the lesson it imparts here is that sometimes, letting go is the only answer. It might hurt for a short while but would be beneficial for the growth of all parties in the longer run. Hiccup understands that even his band of vikings, who have become friendly with dragons, can still be a threat to them in the future. Humans won't be welcome in the secret world and would always be intruders. Worse, greedy bounty hunters might use his followers to track down the safe haven. He asks Toothless to lead everyone to safety, though the final goodbye isn't as teary-eyed as one was expecting it would be.
The animation, by DreamWorks, needless to say, is spot on. You get to see dragons of all shapes and sizes and better still, infused with different personalities as well. The whole film is a visual treat and the hidden world portions are the veritable icing on the cake. This third film forms the epic conclusion to one of the most humourous and emotional animation films about growing up and doing the right thing. Would it truly end the saga? Well, as long as we continue to believe in them, there would be dragons...
