In a career spanning over two decades, Karan Johar has established himself as one of the most iconic directors that we have witnessed in Bollywood history. Karan is really as Bollywood as it gets when it comes to his movies. He’s made his audience a part of his larger-than-life world which comprises of beautiful girls, men with chiselled bodies, picture perfect sets and most importantly solid and interesting storylines. While a certain section of the audience may argue that Karan rides on his films being visually appealing more than other filmmakers and credit that for his outstanding success, however, above all, a director’s job is to successfully tell a story that the audience can relate to, build characters in such a way that the audience can sympathise and feel for them and Karan Johar ticks all the boxes in these departments. As along with portraying some powerful stories, Karan has also given us characters that have stayed in our hearts long after we’ve seen the film. It might be that sassy Poo played by Kareena Kapoor Khan or the ever so determined Rizwan Khan played by Shah Rukh Khan. Each character created a special place in our hearts in their own special way. So, on the occasion of Karan Johar’s birthday, we decide to list some of our favourite characters from the films of the ace director.
Rahul - Khuch Khuch Hota Hai
Probably the most iconic character from any Karan Johar movie. Along with being the coolest guy in the college, Rahul from “Khuch Khuch Hota Hai” also gave us many valuable lessons on love, life and friendship. His character’s transformation from a GAP-wearing, basketball-wielding hippy into a responsible and loving father is something that each one of us loved. Plus, he gave us this gem: “Hum ek baar jeete hai, ek baar marte hai… aur pyar ek baar hi hota hai.”

Anjali - Khuch Khuch Hota Hai
Rahul and Anjali were without a doubt our favourite pair of friends that we’ve seen on screen as they were as close as it gets to how best friends behave in real life. Yes, best friends do fight over the pettiest things that don’t matter, but, at the end of the day you always know that they’ll be back to messing around with each other. The competitive spirit they had to outdo each other in everything (specially basketball) made them relatable AF. Just like Rahul, Anjali too has a massive character arc in the film. From playing the stubborn tomboy with a hilariously weird taste in fashion, she turns into this ultimate girl next door when we see her as a teacher on the summer camp attended by Rahul’s daughter Anjali (Sana Saaed). We also got a glimpse of the bubbly Anjali again in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. although the character was different in many ways, we enjoyed watching it as well.

Mrs.Breganza - Khuch Khuch Hota Hai
The short skirt clad, young at heart college professor, who turned to the cue music of ‘Miss Braganza Aha!’ was played by Archana Puran Singh in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. This one is surely one of the most iconic characters in Hindi cinema and was a teacher we did not know we wanted until Karan Johar introduced us to her. Miss Braganza’s love affair with principal Malhotra was a given considering how great she was. She was fun, friendly and had us at ‘Rahul… pyaar kya hai?
In fact, Mrs.Braganza was also the inspiration behind Poo aka Pooja from Khushi Kabhie Gham. Karan Johar revealed, “The same character of Miss Braganza I reused in K3G as Poo. Actually, Miss Braganza was the inspiration behind Poo. And the way Archana portrayed the character, she was bang on.”

Poo - Kareena Kapoor Khan
The film, that was all about loving your parents, gave millennials an unlikely pop culture icon and it was not the adarsh beta or bahu, but in Poo, AKA Pooja, played pretty flawlessly by Kareena Kapoor Khan. Even though she might seem like a spoilt brat at first, you realise that she is much more than that. Poo taught an entire generation of girls how to own their confidence. She was all about self-love, and stood up to slut shaming, even if her own sister was doing it.

Rizwan Khan - Shah Rukh Khan
Rizwan Khan played by Shah Rukh Khan in My Name Is Khan probably sets the benchmark when it comes to what you can achieve if you give it your all. After being accused of being a terrorist since he was a muslim, Rizwan decided to personally inform the president that even though his name was Khan, he was not a terrorist.

Alizeh - Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
In his last directorial venture, Karan Johar gave us two powerful female characters. First, there was Saba, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was a divorcée but wasn't depicted as a sad, lovelorn person. Then, we had Alizeh, played by Anushka Sharma, who comes across as the perfect modern day girl - head strong, confident and wears her heart on her sleeve. Anushka’s portrayal of Alizeh without a doubt proves to be one that every girl from today’s generation should look upto.

Maya from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
In this film, Karan Johar tried to deal with the concepts of loveless marriages and extramarital affairs. Rani Mukerji’s character Maya, marries her childhood friend, mostly because she feels obligated to do so. Later on, when she realises that she never loved her husband, she has the guts to finally break free of societal norms and go after her own happiness.

Shanaya - Student Of The Year
One can argue that Shanaya is a 2012 revamp of Poo. Even though she has an ego that makes her feel she’s better than everyone else, she does have a little soft corner in her heart that just needs some love.

Silent Sardarji - Khuch Khuch Hota Hai
“Tussi jaa rahe ho? Tussi Na Jao.” Whenever someone mentions Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, we picture an adorable sardar kid saying these lines. Although this character didn’t have any lines in the film other than this, he sure managed to make an impact on the film and on our hearts.

Yash Raichand - Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
The orthodox Indian father who puts the principals and values of the family over everything else. Played rather perfectly by Amitabh Bachchan, this is one character you would not want to get an argument with. The line, “Keh Diya na… bas keh Diya.” is enough proof to show that he ain’t budging no matter what.
