War-based films are the new rage. Films like URI: The Surgical Strike and Raazi have worked wonders at the box-office. The films have mostly revolved around the army and the air force. But now a mainstream Bollywood film is being planned around one of the most audacious naval attacks, Operation Trident.
This attack was carried out during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, targeting the Karachi Harbour. December 4, the day on which the attack was carried out, is celebrated as Navy Day as a tribute to its success. Reportedly, the film which is tentatively titled Navy Day will be directed by Razneesh Ghai and is expected to go on the floors by mid-2020.
Bhushan Kumar is producing the film along with Tanuj Garg, Atul Kasbekar and Swati Iyer Chawla. Bhushan Kumar reiterated that this was one of the most successful operations in modern naval history post World War 2. He also informed that our navy suffered no losses and caused heavy casualties on the enemy side. It’s an extraordinary tale of strategy, thrill and bravery according to him.
Operation Trident was planned under the leadership of Admiral Sardarilal Mathradas Nanda and masterminded by then Fleet Operations Officer of the Navy, Gulab Mohanlal Hiranandani. This operation was followed by another one, Operation Python on December 8 and 9, which was also successful.
Navy Day also focusses on how a bunch of people came together, their dynamics and the high-level strategizing in complete secrecy, that resulted in a milestone achievement. Reportedly, the script should be locked by August-September with detailed research with those, who were a part of the operation. The casting will follow along with three to four months of exhaustive preps.
Tanuj Garg informed that their team would be launching another leading figure from the advertising world after directors Ram Madhvani and Suresh Triveni of Neerja and Tumhari Sulu respectively. Tanuj is an army kid, who shot the campaign to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the Indian airforce. Tanuj is confident that Razneesh will bring a new approach to the genre with his storytelling skills. The film will be shot in Mumbai and Delhi and internationally as well. It will be released by early 2021.
